DESPITE being seriously undermanned by the loss of seven frontline players in their rugby semi-final against Brothers last Saturday, Southern Bay Cyclones played with courage and commitment before going down 47-7.
Playing against the wind in the first half, Cyclones conceded an early penalty goal and a try to trail 8-0 after just six minutes.
The game settled into one of cut and thrust, with Cyclones scrum dominating and the lineout performing well, with Michael O'Connor to the fore, before Brothers scored a further try 10 minutes before the break to lead 13-0. As halftime closed Cyclones were penalised and had hooker Sean O'Donnell sinbinned.
Brothers kicked the penalty for 16-0 and from the restart scored a converted try for 23-0 at the break.
The halftime peptalk saw Cyclones determined to play for territory with the wind and set a platform for attack.
Despite being one short, the remaining seven forwards played with purpose under the urging of halfback Jimmy Miles and Cyclones were soon in Brothers territory, going close twice with rolling and driving mauls before an unforced turnover saw Brothers go the length of the field to score a converted try under the posts for 30-0.
When Cyclones returned to full strength Brothers replaced a prop on a tactical substitution and scrums were uncontested, negating Cyclones domination in the forwards. Another penalty goal and converted try took Brothers to 40-0 and Cyclones' game plan was gone.
Despite these setbacks, the forwards really put it to Brothers and from a surging maul lock Glen Hardie scored a try converted by fullback Calvin Young for 40-7.
Prop Andrew McFerran and No. 8 Matt Gill both went close in the forward exchanges and the backs, with limited opportunity, attacked valiantly before a final turnover on the bell saw Brothers break out again for a long range try, to record the final score of 47-7.
Thanks go to the three players released by Redlands Rugby Club to give Cyclones a reserve bench for the match. Despite the poor outcome Cyclones are proud of their season and they achieved their pre-season goal of making the semis in their first year in the Brisbane Rugby Competition.
