SIXTEEN-year-old North Stradbroke surfer Tim Macdonald has stamped himself as a future star of the sport by finishing second in the top division of the Quiksilver Queensland Junior Titles series, which wrapped up on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
Coolangatta’s James Woods finished in the numero uno position in the three-round series with 2555 points, ahead of MacDonald on 2330 points.
The top four juniors will form the U18 Queensland team to contest the Quiksilver Australian Grommet Titles in Western Australia in December.
The Quiksilver Queensland Junior Titles series was contested during June-July at the Gold Coast, North Stradbroke and Sunshine Coast.
Although Macdonald did not place in the final event at Coolum his two second placings at the previous rounds secured him enough points to take second spot in the series overall.
Meanwhile, Point Lookout surfer Lincoln Taylor has moved into second place on the Australasian Pro Junior
Circuit after coming third at the Fantastic Pro Junior in South Australia last week.
Lincoln was knocked out in the semifinals by Owen Wright, who went on to win the event.
Lincoln, who won the Oakley Pro Junior at Point Lookout in February, is also the highest ranked Queenslander on the Pro Junior tour.
In other surfing news, Bede Durbidge – another North Stradbroke-bred surfer – has retained his third placing on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour with a quarterfinals finish in the Billabong Pro.
Bede was defeated by fellow Aussie Joel Parkinson at the event in Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.
With six stops to go on the tour, Bede now has only a 29-point lead over fourth-placed Mick Fanning, who moved up the rankings as runner-up.
Bede will be in action again next week when the Rip Curl Pro Search is held at a location to be advised.
