 Jamie set for nationals

Jamie set for nationals

18/08/2008 4:40:00 PM
FAITH Lutheran College student Jamie Howell has had an outstanding year of sport.

Jamie was age champion for the cross country and athletics.

Her success allowed Jamie to then compete at district, regional and state levels for all three disciplines as an athlete with a disability (AWD).

Jamie was born profoundly deaf and qualifies to compete as an AWD, where all athletes with disabilities receive a classification.

When they compete the winner is not determined by first place in the race, but rather by a complex system taking into account their classification and their time as a percentage of the national record.

To be selected in representative teams students must be placed first or second in the event and get under the qualifying times.

Jamie finished second in the 50m breaststroke at the Queensland School Sports State Swimming Championships and has been selected to compete for Queensland at the Pacific School Games in Canberra in December.

Jamie finished first in the Queensland Primary Schools Cross Country Championships and has been selected to compete for Queensland at the nationals to be held in Geelong in August.

"Jamie's success has been a great inspiration to our other students and we wish her all the best for her upcoming competition," said head of the Junior School at Faith, Eloise Brigden-Anderson.
