TWO young Redland athletes with disabilities – Dylan Sheen and Jamie Howell – have won medals at the Queensland School State Cross Country Championships at Toowoomba.
Jamie, 10, of Redland Bay, won her 2000m race, taking gold and earning a place on the Queensland team travelling to the Cross Country Nationals in Geelong to in August.
Dylan, 12, of Birkdale, was placed third in his 3000m individual race, earning a bronze medal.
Jamie and Dylan teamed with two other athletes in the 4x1000m relay to bring home another gold medal.
Dylan challenges his physical restrictions of cerebral palsy on a daily basis.
He lives an active life with involvement in swimming. He has reached brown belt in karate with Sports Karate Australia and joined Little Athletics last year.
He also plays football, basketball and competes in athletics carnivals for Birkdale South State School.
Dylan competed in the school State Athletics Championships in Cairns last year in the 100m, 200m, shotput and long jump, for which he now holds the state record.
Jamie was born profoundly deaf but has never let that stop her.
She is a keen sportsperson, consistently being placed in events at school swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals at Faith Lutheran College.
She recently became her school’s age champion for cross country and the school age champion for athletics.
She has also competed at state and national levels in rope skipping as a member of Cleveland Air Magic.
Last year, after being placed third in the 1100-metre walk at the Queensland Little Athletics Regional Championships, she went on to compete at the State Championships.
Jamie finished second in the 50m breaststroke at the Queensland School Sports Regional Swimming Championships this year and has been selected to compete for Queensland at the Pacific School Games in Canberra in December.
Both these elite athletes are looking forward to their next challenge at the district athletics carnival to be held at the end of July, and encourage other future paralympians to have a go.
