Alex Hills Bombers show grit

15/08/2008 12:00:00 AM
THE young and depleted Alexandra Hills Bombers showed plenty of courage despite being convincingly beaten by Wynnum 6.21.117 to 6.7.43 in their last QAFL game of the season on Saturday.

With the in-form Troy Beresford out injured with a dislocated shoulder and Bombers' leading goal kicker Luke Faulkner out with work commitments, the match was always going to be a tough assignment against the second-placed Vikings at their Wynnum grounds.

Bombers coach Graham Henwood welcomed the future of the club, playing several of the under 16s and under 18s in the senior game.

The young players performed like seasoned veterans, with all of them showing courage and commitment to each other and their team mates.

Matthew Finlayson battled hard all day and Nick Atkins surprised many with his efforts at fullback. He may find himself in that position more often.

Wynnum played like a side entering the finals and ended up running away with the game, scoring a well earned 74-point victory.

The Bombers reserve grade side entered the match with several players out with work commitments and minor injuries. Coach Adrian Roberts chose not to risk these players as the ladder position would not change regardless of the result.

The Bombers were placed fourth and assured of a finals spot and perhaps played a little reluctantly.

The first quarter was goal for goal, with Rob Clemesha on target with three majors for the term.

In the second quarter the Vikings were winning the centre clearances and managed to clear the ball into their forward line easily. They converted these opportunities into goals to leave the Bombers chasing all day.

Wynnum ran out winners 14.7.91 to 8.7.55.

The Bombers again take on Wynnum this weekend and are extremely confident of reversing the result.

The game is at Wilston Grange at noon and all supporters are invited to come down and support the players in their quest for a flag.
