Sand mining plan rejected

19/08/2008 4:52:00 PM
REDLAND City Council has rejected a plan by Consolidated Rutile to sell “surplus” sand from its mining activities on North Stradbroke Island.

Councillors voted unanimously on Tuesday to reject the plan, despite advice from council assessment officers who recommended the application be given a preliminary approval.

The proposal would have allowed 500,000 tonnes of "excess" sand to be exported each year.

Councillors argued the plan conflicted with the Redlands Planning Scheme and CRL had not adequately addressed concerns about social and environmental impacts and increased traffic.

CRL says it is "very disappointed" at the decision.

More consideration of proposed developments on their merits; rejection of those developments that don't pass the test. Better outcomes for all residents of the Redlands. Makes sense to me.

RCC should not simply approve things on the basis of a threat by industry to take legal action. Lets not forget industry is not elected to Council. Its a pitty the paper doesn't devote the same attention to report on cases where the court validated Council's stance ie the funeral parlour - what a few lines.

Your criticism of the newspaper for not adequately covering the funeral parlour decision is incorrect. The Bayside Bulletin this week ran an extensive story on the verdict. See http://redland.yourguide.com.au/news/local/news/general/fina l-nail-in-coffin-for-funeral-parlour/1247420.aspx
