MELISSA Wu's mother Debbi had been nervously watching the diving on television when a text message came in.
"Oh my god! How excited are you?" daughter Kirsten wrote.
Debbi hadn't been able to travel to Beijing to see her daughter's Olympic debut, but Melissa's sister Kirsten, father Hap and grandfather Kaung Yin were in the crowd on Tuesday.
Kirsten thought her mum had seen the result and wanted to share in the joy. However, the broadcast was delayed so Debbi hadn't seen the final dives yet.
After an exchange of text messages, she found out Melissa and partner Bree Cole had won silver. The proud mum could relax as she watched the pair somersault and twist their way to Olympic glory.
"Melissa rang me that night. She was so excited and over the moon," Debbi said.
"She has worked so hard and made so many sacrifices. She really deserved it and so did Bree."
