Wu grabs silver medal in Beijing

MELISSA WU likes to stress that she is no longer a little girl, that the nights of sleeping with a big pink teddy called Patchie are far behind her.

Now the 16-year-old Thornlands resident can cuddle up to an Olympic silver medal instead.

Australia's youngest Olympic diver and her partner Bree Cole, 25, the oldest competitor in Tuesday's 10-metre platform final, have more to celebrate than quirks of age.

The pair clinched Australia's first silver medal in Beijing after impressing the judges with their synchronised dives.

"Everyone talks about me being young, but I think I've grown up a lot since the Commonwealth Games, and I just fit into the team," Wu said.

She said it was all about controlling the nerves and using them. Having swatted the butterflies with a clinical first dive, a wobble on their third left them just 1.02 points ahead of Mexican pair Paola Espinosa and Tatiana Ortiz.

The pressure was only amplified by being drawn last; their medal hopes rested on the very last dive of the competition.

"Use the force," Cole said to the girl she considers a little sister as they stood atop the tower - "or something silly like that, just to break the tension".

It worked. They landed the back-two-and-a-half somersault with one-and-a-half twists - the toughest dive of the final - in unison, yet the nature of their sport meant the crowd knew that before they did.

"Mine felt pretty good, and I popped up and looked over at Melissa to see what her face was telling me," Cole said.

She was greeted with a big smile.

There are two competitions effectively at play in the diving at these Games, one to see how high the Chinese will score, the other for second.

With local pair Xin Wang and Ruolin Chen nudging perfection as they sank like twin stones, Wu and Cole's haul was as good as gold.

Wu admitted she was "pretty nervous going in" but said Cole helped her calm the nerves and they both trusted each other to do their best dives.

The pint-sized diver said the event had provided great experience as she prepared for next week's individual platform event.
